Upgrading phpMyAdmin

As the distribution packages do not always provide the newest release of phpMyAdmin this is how to upgrade manually.

Rename existing phpMyAdmin directory

mv /usr/share/phpmyadmin /usr/share/phpmyadmin-old

Create new directory

mkdir /usr/share/phpmyadmin

Change to new directory

cd /usr/share/phpmyadmin

Download and extract phpMyAdmin archive

wget https://files.phpmyadmin.net/phpMyAdmin/4.8.3/phpMyAdmin-4.8.3-all-languages.tar.gz
tar -zxpvf *
cd phpMyAdmin-4.8.3-all-languages
cp -r --preserve=all . ..
cd ..

Create directory for temporary files used by phpMyAdmin

mkdir tmp
chown www-data:www-data ./tmp

Copy original config file to new directory

cp -r --preserve=all /usr/share/phpmyadmin-old/config.inc.php .

Remove directories/files which are not needed anymore

rm -rf phpMyAdmin-4.8.3-all-languages
rm -rf phpMyAdmin-4.8.3-all-languages.tar.gz
rm -rf /usr/share/phpmyadmin-old
